Recruitment Fraud

What is Recruitment Fraud:

Recruitment fraud is a form of fraud where scammers impersonate recruiters to try to steal your identity or your money. Use extra caution when people reach out about jobs to which you never applied.

We are aware of an increase in recruitment fraud involving scammers. These scammers may pretend to represent Security Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York (“Security Mutual Life”) and contact prospective candidates and offer false employment opportunities. These scammers may request candidates transfer money or provide sensitive personal or financial information in order to advance their application. These communications are fraudulent. They do not originate from Security Mutual Life and are not associated in any way with our recruitment process.

Identifying Recruitment Fraud:

Signs may include things like:

  • messages with poor spelling or grammar;
  • messages asking for personal or financial information, or for you to buy your own equipment or software;
  • offers that seem too good to be true;
  • messages that are not addressed personally to you;
  • generic or unusual company email addresses; or
  • rushed interview timelines or “urgent” requests for personal information.

Security Mutual Life Does Not:

  • ask a candidate for any payment during the recruitment or application process, or require a candidate to purchase equipment or software;
  • request a candidate’s personal information without their having applied through our Company site first;
  • require a candidate to provide bank account details or credit card information in an email or email attachment;
  • conduct interviews through third-party messaging platforms like LinkedIn or Skype, or through SMS messages;
  • send emails from any domain except “@smlny.com”;
  • make offers without a live video interview or in-person interview; or
  • send employment offer letters via unencrypted e-mail or via instant messaging or texts.

If you question the validity of the job opportunity, please check the Company’s careers page. All open positions are posted under “Corporate Opportunities” at smlny.com. A job opportunity that does not appear on, or ultimately link back to, the careers page on smlny.com is likely fraudulent.

If you suspect you are the target of a scam, you should contact your local law enforcement agency or the FBI’s Internet Crimes Complaint Center and monitor your credit reports.

Security Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York bears no responsibility for fraudulent offers. If you receive what you believe is fraudulent recruitment contacts from someone impersonating a Security Mutual Life employee, please reach out to [email protected], using the subject “Recruitment Fraud.”
