Red Sky at Night: Treat Your Heart Right!

Feb 4, 2019Company News

In honor of American Heart Month, Security Mutual Life has taken an old adage and given it a new twist: “Red sky at night, treat your heart right!” The Binghamton-based life insurance company is lighting the top of its headquarters in red, adding a red glow to the downtown night sky as a reminder for people to treat their hearts right by making healthy choices.

“For many of us, seeing the color red during February naturally reminds us of Valentine’s Day and red hearts,” said Security Mutual Life Chairman, President and CEO Bruce W. Boyea. “So this is the perfect time to be thinking about another very important matter of the heart: helping prevent heart disease, for both ourselves and the people we love. According to the American Heart Association, someone has a heart attack or stroke every 40 seconds, and heart disease is our nation’s No. 1 killer. We at Security Mutual really want to shine the light on heart health, encourage people to educate themselves about heart disease, and inspire everyone to make simple lifestyle changes that can make a positive difference in heart health and quality of life.”

Joining Security Mutual Life Chairman, President and CEO Bruce W. Boyea were New York State Senator Fred Akshar; Christopher Whalen, representing New York State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo; Broome County Executive Jason Garnar; Binghamton Mayor Richard David; Regional Director of the American Heart Association Gina Chapman; and Lourdes | Ascension President and CEO Kathryn Connerton, who is also serving as chairperson of the 2019 Southern Tier Heart Walk.

Security Mutual and its employees are also featuring a variety of activities to raise heart-health awareness within the Company. On February 1, employees celebrated National Wear Red Day® and Go Red for Women by wearing red, as well as by raising funds for the American Heart Association in support of its mission of saving lives. Throughout American Heart Month, the Company newsletter is including heart-healthy tips and information. The Company’s cafeteria offers daily heart-healthy menu choices, not only during American Heart Month, but all year long. And, of course, Security Mutual employees will once again be taking part in the annual Southern Tier Heart Walk, which this year is scheduled for April 7 at SUNY Broome.

Join Security Mutual and its employees in taking up this life-saving message, and be sure to visit the American Heart Association website at www.heart.org for a wealth of heart-healthy information, from tips and hacks to recipes, articles and videos.
