Jan 21, 2020Company News

(Binghamton, NY • January 21, 2020) Joined by organizations from throughout the Albany community, today Security Mutual Life, SEFCU, and Tri City Rentals announced they are teaming up with the Siena and UAlbany men’s basketball teams to help Sock Out Cancer® in the Capital District. The organizations will be sponsoring the February 5 UAlbany game at the SEFCU Arena, followed by the February 7 Siena game at the Times Union Center. Net proceeds raised during both events will benefit St. Peter’s Cancer Care Center and The Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Albany Medical Center. Both centers will use the funds for their cancer patients who need financial assistance paying for basic non-medical necessities such as food, housing and transportation to medical treatments.

“People may not realize how overwhelming costs can be when a patient is fighting cancer,” said Bruce W. Boyea, Chairman and CEO of Security Mutual Life. “And that’s why Sock Out Cancer® was created—to help cancer patients who are struggling financially so they can better focus their energy on fighting cancer.”

Boyea praised Albany Med and St. Peter’s for the amazing work they do, and he thanked everyone who has come together in support of the region’s cancer patients. “This event simply could not happen without the participation of Siena, UAlbany and the many generous sponsors who have stepped up to make these two events a reality. We are grateful for their tremendous support, and we look forward to making a difference in the lives of local cancer patients.”

People in the community can help out by purchasing a pair of Sock Out Cancer’s signature multi-color socks. There are many types of cancer, represented by more than 25 different colors, and the brightly colored Sock Out Cancer® socks symbolize the fight against cancer in all its forms. Socks will be available for sale at both basketball games, and can also be purchased at the UAlbany and Siena bookstores, as well as online at sockoutcancer.org. The net proceeds from the Albany sock sales will stay local and will be equally distributed to Albany Med and St. Peter’s Hospital for their financially distressed cancer patients.

“We encourage everyone to wear their Sock Out Cancer® socks and come and enjoy these games in support of the area’s two very talented Division I basketball teams, as well as in support of everyone in the Capital Region who is fighting cancer,” said Boyea. “We hope to see you there as we all join together to help Sock Out Cancer®.”
