In celebration of National Wear Red Day®, Security Mutual Life joined with the American Heart Association to help promote American Heart Month and illuminated its headquarters in downtown Binghamton red on Friday, February 4.

This year marks the 18th National Wear Red Day®. Celebrated each year on the first Friday in February, the day brings greater attention to heart disease as a leading cause of death for Americans. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The good news is 87 percent of all heart issues are believed to be preventable through small lifestyle changes such as having a healthy diet, getting more physical activity, and not smoking or vaping. That makes awareness, education, research, and resources vital to the cause this annual event supports.

“Go Red is a day to unite as a community and to take a stand against the leading killer of Americans,” said Kirk Gravely, President and Chief Executive Officer of Security Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. “We are proud to join with the American Heart Association to help promote National Wear Red Day® and American Heart Month. It serves as a fantastic opportunity to spread the word of the many simple, positive steps people can take to improve and protect their heart health.”

The AHA website offers myriad resources for people to help protect and improve their heart health. For example, knowing four key health numbers for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and weight can help patients understand and reduce their risk. The website also offers easy ways to incorporate more movement into each day, stress-busting tips and great recipes that are good for people’s hearts and for their wallets.

In addition to lighting the Company’s building red, Security Mutual Life is sharing AHA educational materials with its employees, as well as sponsoring virtual Company fundraising events to benefit the American Heart Association and its programs.
